PMS Gig Guide Monday 26th August 2019
MONDAY SisBis vs Boogaloo DJs – Phase One – 6pm Giovanna of SisBis and Jack Tilston from Boogaloo go toe-to-toe in the Ropewalks record shop turned cosey club until the small hours. TUESDAY The Jubilee Stompers – Phase One – 8pm Dragging listeners and on-lookers back through the ages to the likes of Duke Ellingotn, Fletcher Henderson, and Bix Beiderbecke, this cohort of 5 or so players is on hot form, with two horns and a singing rhythm section. WEDNESDAY Merseyside Improvisers Orchestra – Kazimier Stockroom – 8:30pm This month a workshop takes place privately before a performance to the public (so arrive in good time if you intend on taking part), featuring Liverpool luminaries such as Michael Metcalfe, Ged Barry, Phil Morton and Nick Branton. THURSDAY Tess Parks – Phase One – 7:30pm Toronto native Parks is known for her split-header records with Anton Newcombe (he of Brian Jonestown Massacre), and here steps out on her own, touting ‘hippified psychedelia’ and making a more than capable frontperson with backing band. FRIDAY We Are All Trees ‘Reincarnated’ – Fell Foot Wood – all weekend from 1pm This woodland in Newby Bridge near Ulverston hosted for many years a series of small-capacity ‘happenings’ with a decent atmosphere and inclusive, ritual-y feel. They’re back after a spell off, hopefully quashing their midnight-music curfew this time! Local-ish acts such as Water and The Bear Around Your Neck make the trek up to the start of the Lake District for what will be a deep trip. SATURDAY King Yellowman – 24 Kitchen Street – 7pm A pioneer of dancehall reggae brought to the Baltic Triangle by the Positive Vibration crew along with Yellowman’s Sagittarius Band. SUNDAY Deerhoof – Gorilla (Manchester) – 7:30pm The best guitar band in the world: from hyper-expressive instrumental musicianship (notably in drummer Greg Saunier and the current double-lead-guitar line-up) to the understated, muted fronting from bassist/singer Satomi, Deerhoof have a tireless work ethic and too many great records to list. Rock done well with fun and high high energy. LOOKING AHEAD FRIDAY 13th September King Khan’s Louder Than Death – The Zanzibar – 7:30pm A show that gets its turn on the road some 13 years in the making, Louder Than Death is a bit of an In The Red records supergroup, featuring he of The Shrines, and BBQ, messr King Khan. The night also marks a welcome return to the Go-Go Cage, Liverpool out-rock promotional stronghold. Prep for grim overstated / overstimulated garage’roll set to deliver high frequency hearing loss and all. WEDNESDAY 18th September The Ex 40th Anniversary Tour – The Deaf Institute (Manchester) – 7pm A still-vital group from the original post-punk and subsequent euro-squat boom, The Ex remain a thrilling live prospect and an adventurous category-defying group of skilled instrument-deconstructing friends. Guitar, bass, drums, etc, but unpacked in a fascinating and informed way. SATURDAY 23rd November Richard Dawson – Studio2 Parr Street – 8pm Transcendental stuff from the unmissable, timeless songwriter and singer. In true PMS style Richard Dawson’s music defies immediate categorisation but comes out of a background in free improvisation by way of a one-person folk storytelling revivalism. Always profound and frequently moving. Shh – keep him a secret!
