So it all happened…”The Popular Music Show” resumed broadcasting on Sunday 31st March, with plenty of Now and lots of Then. Thanks to Svara Radio for accommodating the team in their bijou Baltic Triangle studios.
Highlights? There were a few – Scottish small pipes, Yo La Tengo, plenty of World Music, local music from Earlestown band The K’s, a few gig tip-offs, and the cream of the latest releases from the “PMS” inbox. Two hours of “quality listening for quality listeners.” And if you missed it you can catch it on Svara’s Mixcloud site and the playlist will be on our website's blog section soon. You have a month to digest all of that, and maybe get in touch with us about it on Facebook or Instagram, or by E-Mail - and then we’ll be back with the next programme in our Svara Residency on the last Sunday of April.
You’re welcome. Please put the word around that we’re back, and help us build back our audience. The longest-running alternative music show on UK radio never fails to delight and surprise..

PMS Now & Then is the current iteration of our programme – a live audio+video broadcast streamed from Svara Radio on the Sunday of each month, then shared here (below) as keepsake for ever after:
^ October's Popular Music Show - Roger and George, plenty of Prince, heaps of World-y
^ September 2024: Karen and Roger back in the Svara saddles
^ August 2024 with Roger and Karen (and the concluding show in our original 6-month residency on Svara, so reflective and reflect-full)
^ July 2024 was Karen and George in full "what summer?" mode
^ June's programme was a Roger and George joint in four segments of must-hears
^ May held 120 minutes of the most relevant sounds to hit our in-trays, turntables and pen-sticks, this time in the care of Roger and Karen
^ Roger, Karen and George returned for a speed-run hour of old/new/borrowed/you on the last Sunday in April.
^ Our return to the airwaves courtesy of Svara Radio: an Easter Sunday 2-hour comeback special with Roger, Karen and George.
An update from the Popular Music Show
The PMS team is delighted to share news of our return to radio. ‘The Popular Music Show: Now and Then’ will be a 6-month residency at Svara Radio on the last Sunday of each month from March through August.
PMS: N&T will have its first live to air date on the 31st March - at 6pm - and it’ll be a two hour special at that. We’ll continue to champion the new and exciting in music while rifling through and riffing on our own extensive archival collections.
Join Roger, Karen and George live on SvaraRadio.com and on Mixcloud, or listen back after the fact through links on our home page.
We’re looking forward to sharing the most essential music: borrowed, new, challenging, and “you”.

“The Popular Music Show” ceased broadcasting on the BBC on May 19th. This brought to an end 46 years of alternative music on Radio Merseyside. It is of course all to do with the changes to Local Radio which will affect pretty much everybody on the station by the summer.
That final show on the BBC is available for re-listen here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p0flm5gc and the last stretch of four episodes will live online at this link for a matter of weeks. Stream away.
The final programmes were a series of “specials”, to manage a decent retrospect for listeners, including programmes dedicated to World Music, Local Music, Music Sessions, Interviews with musical eminences from our time on-air, and climaxing in a whole evening of on-air celebration including another of our “Live Relays” (formerly from Berlin and Estonia, but this from a little nearer to home).
It's worth remembering that we will end as the longest-running alternative music show on UK radio, and that we have always been a pioneering and adventurous programme.
In November 1992 we broadcast the first on-air live mixing on the BBC
We broadcast a remix of one of our programmes (remixed in Berlin) while the programme was still broadcasting
We were the Regional Rock Show back when regional was first a “thing”
We recently broadcast a live relay from Estonia with Tallinn band Shelton San, only the second time in history that an Estonian band has had a session with the BBC (the first being 40 years ago, a John Peel Session)
And we have kept faith with the local creative underground where the real genius of the city and region is to be found.
PMS will continue to exist with our regular shows on local digital station Melodic Distraction.
Keep up to date with us via our mailing list.
