The Spirit of Liverpool – VideOdyssey & other venues – 11-19 May
“Reclaiming women’s histories through film” is the aim and tag-line of this week-long film festival showing some fascinating documentaries, shorts, and feature films across various alternative make-shift cinemas around Liverpool. ‘Liverpool Women United’ at Kitty’s Launderette (Monday 13th) and Welcome II The Terrordome at VideOdyssey (Saturday 18th) both stand out as good excuses to get off the sofa.

Tuesday 14th
Crack Cloud – Shipping Forecast – 7:30pm
Angular, sharp and spiky post-punk that is well-honed here by Canadian revolving-door group – the band bills itself as a ‘mixed media collective’ “modelled around harm reduction philosophy… a rehabilitative outlet for a revolving cast of multi-disciplinary artists across Canada.” Support comes from on-a-roll locals Yammerer and unknown knowns NOV3L. A tip of the hat to Harvest Sun for further expanding their remit when booking interesting and intriguing guitar music in our city.

Neil Campbell’s Tabula Rasa Suite – Parish Church – 1pm
Especially for World Meditation Day, the meticulous local solo guitarist presents his ‘pastoral suite’ in a lunch-time concert setting at the heart of L2. Free entry and finished by 2pm.
 
Writing on the Wall / Where are we now 2019: Peter Tatchell – Leaf – 7pm
Arrested and detained in 2018 for a one-man protest in Moscow against the state of LGBTQIA+ rights in Russia, Peter Tatchell delivers a keynote speech in response to the current state of the global movement for LGBTQIA+ rights.

Byenary – Sound Food & Drink – 7pm
Queercore noise punks from Brighton, Byenary are joined by Bitch Hunt from London, Piss Kitti from Liverpool, and scousers Q-Folk for a night of LGBTQ-friendly rioting.

Friday 17th
J Mascis – Arts Club Theatre – 7pm
For the un-initiated, J Mascis functions as one of the grunge originators and is a master of under/overstated guitar playing. Stepping out solo away from his much-adored alternative rock power trio Dinosaur Jr, this is a re-scheduled date from January this year, with lauded recent record ‘Elastic Days’ still providing the basis of the material for his live sets. Opening act is country-folk tinged independent Philadelphia artist Rosali.

Light Night – everywhere – 5pm until late
Starting as the best opportunity to visit the city’s museums and galleries outside of regular hours – and enjoy the party spirit that comes with evening revelry around such spots – Light Night has grown into a huge city centre celebration for all ages, tastes and persuasions. Starting at 5pm, almost every cultural institution, big or small, will be opening their doors until around 9pm. Highlights are hard to choose in this larger-than-ever-before programme, but our picks would obviously include the Ritual of Retail series – music for shops, commissioned by us at PMS – plus the goings-on around the Anglican Cathedral and Albert Dock with provide dramatic, drop-in performances. Cave Raves at UoL, Spanish Inquisition at Central Library, a Wicker Woman in the Georgian Quarter, and Anti-Microbial Avengers all await, in this year’s far-reaching programme.

Electric Six – Arts Club (Theatre) – 7pm
The world’s favourite disco-punk band has sold out this headline gig! Only seems like a month ago they were playing the Zanzibar or a tiny place on Renshaw Street. Kudos.

The Bevis Frond – Shipping Forecast – 7:30pm
First gig in Liverpool for two decades from these underground songsters, the Bevis Frond are an oft-referenced psychedelic group, and act as heroes to the likes of Teenage Fanclub and Elliott Smith (who both covered their material in the past).

Space Jamz: Isocore – Smithdown Social Club – 6pm
Fantastic use of a long-time out-of-service community centre, Space Jamz have been revivifying what was once known as south liverpool’s conservative club, with family-friendly electronic music boogies on intermittent weekend nights throughout this year. Each of these events acts as a fundraiser for what will soon become Smithdown Road’s go-to hanging out place. Worthy cause, well worth sticking one’s head in if they’re nosey about the rejuvenation of the Penny Lane area in particular.

Sunday 19th
Murad Ali & Kousic Sen – Capstone Theatre – 1pm
Presented her for a sarangi and table matinee recital, maestro Murad Ali will be performing alongside percussion master Kousic Sen in this concert of stunning melodies and rhythmic beats.
Murad Ali is a sixth generation sarangi player, having begun his musical journey at the age of 10. Alongside his classical training, he has also participated in cross-cultural and experimental musical endeavours. Murad is an award-winning musicians who has played in venues across the world.
A ‘Music for the Mind and Soul’ concert would not be complete without tabla favourite, Kousic Sen. The master drummer from Kolkata is known globally for his world-class percussion skills and he is one of the most sought after accompanists.
