When transgender artist Mandy Romero set off to cross Asia from China to Turkmenistan in 2017, she was determined to bring back a visual record of her encounters in some of the most illiberal and intolerant regimes in the Northern Hemisphere. Travelling with a large square of red silk as her main costume resource, to signify both the communist origins of the countries and the Silk Road route she was following, Romero brought a set of portraits of herself taken by a fascinating varity of photographers, many of whom she met along the way, back to the UK. Including location shots from China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, Strange Lands and How to Survive is a captivating exhibition that will be held within the Unity Theatre Bar, and is free to enter. Brooklyn-based cellist, composer and sound-artist from France. She accesses concepts as diverse as Noise, contemporary classical, free jazz, and experimental traditions but adheres to none of them. Her music mixes deep melancholia with fleeting harsh noise walls, and was described by the New York Times as “steadily scathing music, favoring long and corrosive atonalities”. Driven by a fierce interest in pure sound and inherent texture, Leila challenges conventional cello practice through extreme extended techniques and unorthodox amplification methods, to the extent she sometimes seems to be playing the P.A system rather than the cello. Her compositions frequently incorporate sound-spatialization by way of site-specific pieces and multichannel installations. Plus: ATATAT – solo project of J C Barbara of Barberos et al; RAH-Solve Et Coagula - seemingly intense Tarot-core act of self-flagellation; Ben Duvall – ExEIH founder playing all new solo materia.

Chris Wood is an uncompromising writer whose music reveals his love for the un-official history of the English speaking people. With gentle intelligence he weaves the tradition with his own contemporary parables. A self-taught musician, composer and song writer, Chris is a lifelong autodidact whose independent streak shines through everything he does. Always direct and unafraid to speak his mind, his song writing has been praised for its surgical clarity. He cites his major influence as “Anon”.
His most recent album ‘So Much to Defend’ has received wide critical acclaim and includes reflections on minor league football, empty nest syndrome, learning to swim, Cook-in Sauce and, not least, the Gecko as a metaphor for contemporary society. Hollow Point; his chilling ballad of the shooting of Jean Charles Menezez, won a BBC Folk Award (he's won six.) and emphatically secured Wood’s place as a serious speech-master for the unofficial history of England. Collaborators include Martin Carthy, Dizraeli, Billy Bragg, Andy Cutting, Andy Irvine, Karine Polwart, Jean Francois Vrod, The Imagined Village, Hugh Lupton, Martin Butler and many others. On stage Chris has the air of a craftsman who no longer needs to be precious about his art. Without any apparent effort he reaches deep into an enviable repertoire of songs before revealing another gem.
Charlie McKeon tells great stories, both in song and in-between songs. He's is a truly gifted musician with magic, dancing fingers, and a tendency toward beautiful, titling melodies (like that's a bad thing). He's also a funny man and a lovely chap. To see these two wonderful songsmiths playing in the beautiful, elegant surrounds of the Unitarian Church is a rare treat.

In the month Ridley Scott’s classic dystopian sci-fi is set, we bring you an evening of Blade Runner magic.
First up a low-tech screening of Blade Runner. Static is not a sealed box auditorium experience, it’s more street level, more noise, more industrial, more how Blade Runner screen writer Hampton Fancher envisaged the world of Philip K Dick’s masterpiece ‘Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep’, the source novel for the film.
 
Following the film, we treat you to a very special audience with legendary Hollywood insider and the world’s leading authority on Blade Runner, Mr Paul M. Sammon, who will be in conversation with Ivor Powell, Associate Producer of Blade Runner and Alien, and Screenwriter for the forthcoming movie BIOS, released 2 October 2020 through Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment, with Tom Hanks in the lead role.
 
Sammon and Powell will discuss the making of Blade Runner and its subsequent ascent into sci-fi folklore. The discussion will be followed by a Q+A with the audience.

Alexander Tucker + Silvia Battista – Kazimier Stockroom – 7:30pm
Capable of creating immense sounds on such a grand scale that it is astounding to realize that it is (mostly) all the work of just one man. There is a distinct otherworldliness to his art. Psychedelic without ever resorting to tropes of the genre, it’s the subtle thread connecting every aspect of his output, from the vibrant and hypnotic avant-pop of Grumbling Fur, his duo with Daniel O’Sullivan, to extended drone collaborations with Charlemagne Palestine and Stephen O’Malley, to his beautiful yet strangely unnerving paintings and comics. The unknown explored in his visual art was adventurously traveled on “Don’t Look Away” (Thrill Jockey, 2018) where the music, lyrics, and artwork all worked in tandem to conjure a universe that felt as fantastical and mysterious as familiar and warm. “Guild of the Asbestos Weaver”, his new album, due August 23rd on Thrill Jockey captures Tucker’s boundless vision as a composer. Robyn Hitchcock – Capstone Theatre – 7:30pm
Robyn Hitchcock is one of England's most enduring contemporary singer/songwriters and live performers. A surrealist poet, talented guitarist, cult artist and musician's musician, Hitchcock is among alternative rock's father figures and is the closest thing the genre has to a Bob Dylan (not coincidentally his biggest musical inspiration).
Since founding the art-rock band The Soft Boys in 1976, Robyn has recorded more than 20 albums as well as starred in Storefront Hitchcock an in-concert film recorded in New York and directed by Jonathan Demme.
Blending folk and psychedelia with a wry British nihilism, Robyn describes his songs as ‘paintings you can listen to’. His most recent album is self-titled and marks his 21st release as a solo artist. Released on April 21 2017, the album was produced by Brendan Benson (The Raconteurs) and Hitchcock describes it as an "ecstatic work of negativity with nary a dreary groove."

Vic Godard & The Subway Sect + The Ronco Pop-O-Matics – 81 Renshaw – 7:30pm
Formed to play at the 100 Club "punk festival" in 1976, Vic Godard's Subway Sect shot beyond punk – their music a testament to the liberating ethos of the movement. Respected, and deservedly so, Godard (actually Napper) has been a career postman more than he has been a career musician, a fact you might attribute to Subway Sect's early days – when all but Vic were sacked from the band by their manager – but which he has turned to his creative advantage. As a great new comp, 30 Odd Years, amply demonstrates, his music has covered tuneful garage post-punk to existential crooning and witty jazz, his mode an inspirational reconciling of opposites. This woodland in Newby Bridge near Ulverston hosted for many years a series of small-capacity ‘happenings’ with a decent atmosphere and inclusive, ritual-y feel. They’re back after a spell off, hopefully quashing their midnight-music curfew this time! Local-ish acts such as Water and The Bear Around Your Neck make the trek up to the start of the Lake District for what will be a deep trip.
