Comedy set in late seventies Norway about teenager Nikolaj learning to rebel via post punk but failing thanks to his encouraging and even-more-rebellious dad. Travelling with a large square of red silk as her main costume resource, to signify both the communist origins of the countries and the Silk Road route she was following, Romero brought a set of portraits of herself taken by a fascinating varity of photographers, many of whom she met along the way, back to the UK. Including location shots from China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, Strange Lands and How to Survive is a captivating exhibition that will be held within the Unity Theatre Bar, and is free to enter. Her latest work sees her push vocal and musical boundaries even further by effortlessly weaving jazz traditions into her already unique blend. Atlas has worked with Peter Gabriel, Nitin Sawhney, Nigel Kennedy, Indigo Girls, Jean-Michel Jarre, and Ibrahim Maalouf, to name a few, while, most recently, she has been collaborating with the likes of Omar Sosa and Paolo Fresu, whilst co-composing (with frequent collaborator Samy Bishai) the score for Herve Koubi’s 2019 contemporary dance creation Odyssey. http://www.thecapstonetheatre.com/whatson/natacha-atlas.html Friday 15th Leila Bordreuil – 17 Love Lane – 8pm Brooklyn-based cellist, composer and sound-artist from France. She accesses concepts as diverse as Noise, contemporary classical, free jazz, and experimental traditions but adheres to none of them. Her music mixes deep melancholia with fleeting harsh noise walls, and was described by the New York Times as “steadily scathing music, favoring long and corrosive atonalities”. Driven by a fierce interest in pure sound and inherent texture, Leila challenges conventional cello practice through extreme extended techniques and unorthodox amplification methods, to the extent she sometimes seems to be playing the P.A system rather than the cello. Her compositions frequently incorporate sound-spatialization by way of site-specific pieces and multichannel installations. Plus: ATATAT – solo project of J C Barbara of Barberos et al; RAH-Solve Et Coagula - seemingly intense Tarot-core act of self-flagellation; Ben Duvall – ExEIH founder playing all new solo materia. Afrodeutsche – Meraki – 10pm Live stodgy techno from this highly skilled, very much deservedly on-the-rise Manchester producer, with support from Upitup’s mayor of electro keytar, our friend our yours in Merseyside-dwelling Roman expert of the liveset Jacques Malchance. https://www.skiddle.com/e/13629878/ Saturday 16th Blue Orchids – 81 Renshaw Street – 7:30pm Ex-Fall man Martin Bramah (from that band’s initial incarnations) heads up this rich and resonant kosmic guitar pop project. “Blue Orchids, as a post punk psychedelic adjunct to Fall-world are well established in the music enthusiast’s consciousness, and yes, Martin Bramah was a founding father of The Fall, and as expressed recently might have reasonable grounds to even call himself The Fall, well, why not…but then he’s not daft. Perhaps people could do with reconnecting with Martin’s oeuvre a little more deeply than obsessing over the ex-Fall schtick, specially what with the recent albums being a succession of magick pop psych masterpieces choc stock (oh yes) with fabulous gems full of rich, resonant sounds and stinging, esoteric lyrics.” – 81 Renshaw. “While their last studio album, Righteous Harmony Fist was released last year, the band did release The Magical Record Of Blue Orchids in June this year. According to Bramah, it’s “the first covers concept album”. – GIT http://www.81renshaw.co.uk/venue Cowtown – Kazimier Stockroom – 8pm A free gig in this former storage area just up the way from our HQ, expect it to get warm as Liverpool-based newies Fumar Mata open up with their third ever show in as many weeks, stalling the crowd before Leeds’ legendary ‘overstimulated electro-punks’ take to the stage for delightful hook-laden moments for fans of Deerhoof / Devo Giant Swan – The White Hotel – 23:59 The most enjoyable live electronic music being made in the country right now, incidentally by guitar-band guys making use of their voices, effects pedals, and grid-quantised percussive sounds. Supported by Dis Fig, Hesska & Clemency, and Ossia. https://www.residentadvisor.net/events/1300859 Sunday 17th Chris Wood with Charlie McKeon – Ullet Road Unitarian Church – 7pm "... at art school they said I had a remarkable eye for trivia, like it was a bad thing." Chris Wood is an uncompromising writer whose music reveals his love for the un-official history of the English speaking people. With gentle intelligence he weaves the tradition with his own contemporary parables. A self-taught musician, composer and song writer, Chris is a lifelong autodidact whose independent streak shines through everything he does. Always direct and unafraid to speak his mind, his song writing has been praised for its surgical clarity. He cites his major influence as “Anon”. His most recent album ‘So Much to Defend’ has received wide critical acclaim and includes reflections on minor league football, empty nest syndrome, learning to swim, Cook-in Sauce and, not least, the Gecko as a metaphor for contemporary society. Hollow Point; his chilling ballad of the shooting of Jean Charles Menezez, won a BBC Folk Award (he's won six.) and emphatically secured Wood’s place as a serious speech-master for the unofficial history of England. Collaborators include Martin Carthy, Dizraeli, Billy Bragg, Andy Cutting, Andy Irvine, Karine Polwart, Jean Francois Vrod, The Imagined Village, Hugh Lupton, Martin Butler and many others. On stage Chris has the air of a craftsman who no longer needs to be precious about his art. Without any apparent effort he reaches deep into an enviable repertoire of songs before revealing another gem. Charlie McKeon tells great stories, both in song and in-between songs. He's is a truly gifted musician with magic, dancing fingers, and a tendency toward beautiful, titling melodies (like that's a bad thing). He's also a funny man and a lovely chap. To see these two wonderful songsmiths playing in the beautiful, elegant surrounds of the Unitarian Church is a rare treat. https://www.skiddle.com/e/13563846/ Look ahead: Wednesday 20th November Serpente – Stockroom – 8pm Snaking rhythms, fully hypnotic and ever morphing, from Ondness’ drum-machine-heavy moniker-alias Serpente; accompanying is the intrepid open-end simulation explorers Raft of Trash, and gluing the night together sonically will be Lupini. https://www.facebook.com/events/2527432497493303/ Saturday 23rd November An Evening With The Steve Hillage Band – o2 Academy – 7pm https://www.seetickets.com/event/an-evening-with-the-steve-hillage-band/o2-academy-liverpool/1386736 Toxteth Day Of The Dead Hereafter Party – District – Time TBC Paddy Steer, Moody Boyz, and Kermit & The Super Weird System head up a huge huge bill of acts to mark the anniversary of the KLF/JAM’s 3-day set of happenings in the beloved L8 community. Following the film, we treat you to a very special audience with legendary Hollywood insider and the world’s leading authority on Blade Runner, Mr Paul M. Sammon, who will be in conversation with Ivor Powell, Associate Producer of Blade Runner and Alien, and Screenwriter for the forthcoming movie BIOS, released 2 October 2020 through Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment, with Tom Hanks in the lead role. Sammon and Powell will discuss the making of Blade Runner and its subsequent ascent into sci-fi folklore. The discussion will be followed by a Q+A with the audience. There is a distinct otherworldliness to his art. Psychedelic without ever resorting to tropes of the genre, it’s the subtle thread connecting every aspect of his output, from the vibrant and hypnotic avant-pop of Grumbling Fur, his duo with Daniel O’Sullivan, to extended drone collaborations with Charlemagne Palestine and Stephen O’Malley, to his beautiful yet strangely unnerving paintings and comics. The unknown explored in his visual art was adventurously traveled on “Don’t Look Away” (Thrill Jockey, 2018) where the music, lyrics, and artwork all worked in tandem to conjure a universe that felt as fantastical and mysterious as familiar and warm. “Guild of the Asbestos Weaver”, his new album, due August 23rd on Thrill Jockey captures Tucker’s boundless vision as a composer. In focusing on the more arcane aspects of his sound, and giving individual ideas and motifs more space to grow and evolve, Alexander Tucker has made his most immersive and intoxicating music yet. https://www.skiddle.com/e/13591751/ Saturday 28th September Charlie McKeon + Ben Burke + ‘Passing Tides’ screening – 81 Renshaw – 7:30pm Nothingville return to 81 Renshaw with there second 'Something & Nothing' event. A conceptional artist of the golden times, Roy Ayers has indeed stood the test of time. skiddle.com/e/13629145 Robyn Hitchcock – Capstone Theatre – 7:30pm Robyn Hitchcock is one of England's most enduring contemporary singer/songwriters and live performers. A surrealist poet, talented guitarist, cult artist and musician's musician, Hitchcock is among alternative rock's father figures and is the closest thing the genre has to a Bob Dylan (not coincidentally his biggest musical inspiration). Since founding the art-rock band The Soft Boys in 1976, Robyn has recorded more than 20 albums as well as starred in Storefront Hitchcock an in-concert film recorded in New York and directed by Jonathan Demme. Blending folk and psychedelia with a wry British nihilism, Robyn describes his songs as ‘paintings you can listen to’. His most recent album is self-titled and marks his 21st release as a solo artist. Released on April 21 2017, the album was produced by Brendan Benson (The Raconteurs) and Hitchcock describes it as an "ecstatic work of negativity with nary a dreary groove." http://www.thecapstonetheatre.com/whatson/robyn-hitchcock.html Friday 25th October Snapped Ankles – IWF Substation – 7pm Repeato-rock from the trees, it’ll be good to have this London lot back in town with their motorik rhythms and home-made log-synths. Saturday 26th October Vic Godard & The Subway Sect + The Ronco Pop-O-Matics – 81 Renshaw – 7:30pm Formed to play at the 100 Club "punk festival" in 1976, Vic Godard's Subway Sect shot beyond punk – their music a testament to the liberating ethos of the movement. Respected, and deservedly so, Godard (actually Napper) has been a career postman more than he has been a career musician, a fact you might attribute to Subway Sect's early days – when all but Vic were sacked from the band by their manager – but which he has turned to his creative advantage. As a great new comp, 30 Odd Years, amply demonstrates, his music has covered tuneful garage post-punk to existential crooning and witty jazz, his mode an inspirational reconciling of opposites. A dandyish character, Godard has more in common with Edwyn Collins (he sang back-up on A Girl Like You) than Joe Strummer, and he remains ahead of a time that would do well to catch him up. http://www.81renshaw.co.uk/venue Thursday 31st October The Festival of Great Britain (and Northern Ireland) – The White Hotel Likely following on from their utterly unique ‘call in sick’ events, TWH’s in-house crew presents an alternative Samhain, a Britquit party placating us with a “Don’t worry, it’s in our hands”. And so we place full trust in the team on Halloween and supposed ‘brexit day’… Free entry and very probably a fascinating mix-media night currently ‘under wraps’. https://thewhitehotel.club Looking Ahead: Saturday 16th November The Blue Orchids – 81 Renshaw – 7:30pm Blue Orchids, as a post punk psychedelic adjunct to Fall-world are well established in the music enthusiast’s consciousness, and yes, Martin Bramah was a founding father of The Fall, and as expressed recently might have reasonable grounds to even call himself The Fall, well, why not…but then he’s not daft. Perhaps people could do with reconnecting with Martin’s oeuvre a little more deeply than obsessing over the ex-Fall schtick, specially what with the recent albums being a succession of magick pop psych masterpieces choc stock (oh yes) with fabulous gems full of rich, resonant sounds and stinging, esoteric lyrics. http://www.81renshaw.co.uk/venue Giant Swan – The White Hotel – 23:59 Not to be missed live quasi-improvised hard dance music coming out of a hardware and guitar pedals techno persuasion. Dis Fig and Hesska + Clemency well worth showing up early enough for, too. https://www.residentadvisor.net/events/1300859 Saturday 7th December Vetiver – 81 Renshaw – 7:30pm Vetiver is the long-running stage and recording name of San Francisco's Andy Cabic. 'Up On High' is his seventh studio album and the first since 2015. Vetiver has toured around the world on headline tours and supporting artists that include Wilco, The Shins, Fleet Foxes, Beach House, Bob Weir & Phil Lesh, and Vashti Bunyan. Vetiver craft nuanced, understated songs that reward careful listening, building a rich duality; a space where sunshine is only a chord away from melancholy, an introspective lyric underlies an extroverted chorus and subtlety tries to be outgoing in an effort to connect the dots of life’s ellipsis. http://www.81renshaw.co.uk/venue Wednesday 4th September
Mythos: A Trilogy by Stephen Fry Gods / Heroes / Men One of the world’s greatest storytellers, telling the world’s greatest stories. In this trilogy of plays, Stephen Fry takes to the stage in the company of the Greek gods, heroes and men whose gripping tales still echo today. Laugh-out loud funny, mind-blowing and often personal, Mythos is a once-in-a-lifetime experience with the icon himself. Gods charts the creation of the Cosmos and the primordial deities; the splendidly bloody interbreeding and family feuding that led to the rise of the Olympians - Zeus, Hera, Apollo, Athena, Hermes and the rest; and the creation of Humankind. https://www.liverpoolphil.com/whats-on/comedy-spoken-word/mythos-a-trilogy-by-stephen-fry-gods/3352 Thursday 5th September Gintis, Inhaler Collective, Bandit, Pelican Band – Phase One – 7pm A large ensemble, Inhaler Collective seem to be a coming together of myriad new wave of Liverpool jazz world heads, and Pelican Band strike an interesting-sounding chord with their notion of ‘Everly Brothers meets Mercury Rev’. THURSDAY Tess Parks – Phase One – 7:30pm Toronto native Parks is known for her split-header records with Anton Newcombe (he of Brian Jonestown Massacre), and here steps out on her own, touting ‘hippified psychedelia’ and making a more than capable frontperson with backing band. FRIDAY We Are All Trees ‘Reincarnated’ – Fell Foot Wood – all weekend from 1pm This woodland in Newby Bridge near Ulverston hosted for many years a series of small-capacity ‘happenings’ with a decent atmosphere and inclusive, ritual-y feel. They’re back after a spell off, hopefully quashing their midnight-music curfew this time! Local-ish acts such as Water and The Bear Around Your Neck make the trek up to the start of the Lake District for what will be a deep trip. SATURDAY King Yellowman – 24 Kitchen Street – 7pm A pioneer of dancehall reggae brought to the Baltic Triangle by the Positive Vibration crew along with Yellowman’s Sagittarius Band. SUNDAY Deerhoof – Gorilla (Manchester) – 7:30pm The best guitar band in the world: from hyper-expressive instrumental musicianship (notably in drummer Greg Saunier and the current double-lead-guitar line-up) to the understated, muted fronting from bassist/singer Satomi, Deerhoof have a tireless work ethic and too many great records to list. Rock done well with fun and high high energy. LOOKING AHEAD FRIDAY 13th September King Khan’s Louder Than Death – The Zanzibar – 7:30pm A show that gets its turn on the road some 13 years in the making, Louder Than Death is a bit of an In The Red records supergroup, featuring he of The Shrines, and BBQ, messr King Khan.
